STI Screening: Addressing Rising Rates Together

STI rates have increased since COVID-19, making routine screening essential. SelectHealth can provide member rosters for those due for STI screenings to help integrate this into preventive care. Providers may also access SelectHealth member rosters to identify patients due for screening.

Screening Guidelines:

• Chlamydia & Gonorrhea: Screen sexually active adults at risk—new/multiple partners, inconsistent condom use, MSM

• Syphilis: Screen adults with risk factors (multiple partners, HIV, MSM)

• HIV: Screen at least once; repeat if risk factors exist

• Hepatitis B & C: Screen all adults once; repeat for those at risk

Practice Tips:

• Normalize STI discussions during routine visits—older adults may underestimate risk

• Offer swab alternatives (throat, cervical, urethral) if patients hesitate with urine tests

• Use Expedited Partner Therapy (EPT) to reduce reinfection, especially when stigma is a barrier

• Follow CDC guidelines for gonorrhea treatment due to rising antimicrobial resistance
